Small Town Stories: Hazelton, ND

Black Mountain Software recently hit an enormous milestone: signing our 500th customer.  But hold on!  Before we write about that, we want to share our happiness about customer number 499, Hazelton, North Dakota. After working with municipal officials since 2009, BMS is excited to equip Hazelton with the whole nine yards: Utility Billing software Finance software, Payroll software, and our Automated Meter Reading interface module.

by: David Morton, Customer Solutions Coordinator and Guest Blogger for the BMS County Traveling Road Show Series

These are the chronicles of one David Morton, road warrior on a mission to solve client problems for Black Mountain’s Governmental Accounting Software.  What you are about to read is real.

December 13, 2012 -Libby, MT

Well its Sunday, three days after my day two ended (WARNING: Day 2 material just isn’t as fresh as Day 1 and may contain unintended embellishments). But let’s go back…back into the murky world of memory…. Like in the movie Ground Hog’s Day with Ben Affleck….oh wait I mean Bill Murray…nonetheless, my eyes snapped open to the same alarm. How To Know If You’ve Hired a People Person

Debbie, Mindy, and Pat – reunited at Black Mountain Software

“The people with whom you work reflect your own attitude. If you are suspicious, unfriendly and condescending, you will find these unlovely traits echoed all about you. But if you are on your best behavior, you will bring out the best in the persons with whom you are going to spend most of your working hours.”  —  Beatrice Vincent

With hiring more competitive than ever, layoffs happening, and fewer people to do more with less, what makes someone stand out from the rest in an interview?  If you ask Pat Cook, a County Support Specialist at Black Mountain Software, she would say, “personality.”  And so far her intuition has been pretty spot-on.   Read more >

These are the chronicles of one David Morton, road warrior on a mission to solve client problems for Black Mountain’s Governmental Accounting Software.  What you are about to read is real.

December 12, 2012 – Mineral County (9am), Sanders County (1pm)

Bleary eyed, showered, shaved, and dressed, my double-knotted shoes are ready to venture out on the Northwestern Montana loop. Had I started with Libby instead of Superior, you could imagine me as a Montana stock car road warrior: antlered helmet, fur-covered fish in the back of my pickup, always turning left, and making multiple pit stops until I end back home. Multi-tasking + Procrastination = Multi-crastination

“To do two things at once is to do neither.”  —Publilius

Tantek MultitaskingWhat happens when multitasking goes bad? In a time when we are asked to do more with less, multitasking and work seem to go hand in hand.  But do we sometimes use “multitasking” to distract ourselves from what really needs to be done?  In other words, do we become “multicrastinators?”

When we choose to address more pleasant tasks, and avoid tackling more unpleasant, yet important tasks, we end up with a whole lot of nothing done.  We are all guilty of it: checking our email before returning that call about an internal issue; or typing up meeting minutes before tackling a Journal problem.
