Small Town Stories: Helena, Georgia

We are thrilled that during this transition, the cities have decided to merge their software, too, and now McRae will join Helena as part of our Black Mountain Software family.

While McRae is new to us and that is very exciting, we feel that we haven’t done enough talking about how much Helena—a BMS customer since 2006–has meant to us. Over the years, we have enjoyed the southern friendliness and courtesy in our working relationship with the clerks and city manager of Helena: Janeen Tokar (City Manager), Allison Cox (UB Clerk), and Heather Livingston (City Clerk). Scholarship-Winner Binfet’s Essay on “The Role of Technology on Education.”

Flat Classroom SkypeWhat role should technology play in education? That’s quite a big question for any one person to answer! And that is why we are so impressed with Kyla Binfet of West Yellowstone (MT) High School! She is the 2014 Black Mountain Software Scholarship winner for her essay “What Role Should Technology Play in Education?”

Kyla is one of 260 applicants who applied for the 2014 Black Mountain Software $500 Higher Education Scholarship, available to Montana High School graduating seniors who plan to pursue higher education. With that $500 scholarship, Kyla will be attending Trine University in Angola, Indiana (formally known as Tri-State University). Read more >

Recently, we found out some exciting ­news: The cities of McRae and Helena, Georgia (sister cities) are merging January 1, 2015, and have chosen Black Mountain Software as their software partner.

While Helena has long been a BMS customer, we are just now getting acquainted with the tidy little town of McRae! We expect to get to know them very well in the upcoming months, as a city merger is no “little” thing no matter what size the town.

The combining of cities means the combining of everything they do and every process they have into one “new” city: utility billing, property tax collection, bank accounts, even the stationary heading! Read more >

Close the Gender Pay Gap and Ask For More Money

MoneyFACT: On average, American full-time women earn 77 cents to every dollar earned by men.

FACT: Many women don’t even know they are being underpaid, so they cannot secure themselves equal pay for equal work.

FACT: Fifty-one percent of women report they are discouraged or forbidden from discussing their wages.

FACT: Women earn the majority of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate Degrees.

FACT: You are most likely a part of these statistics, and don’t even know it.

There has been a lot of discussion about the President’s “Equal Pay for Women” in the news over the past several months. While this is all great news for working American women, we believe that we cannot sit around and wait for the government to mandate these equal pay rights. Read more >
