Accounting Terms Defined (O – Z)

Accounting starts with A, B, C’s and 1, 2, 3’s.  We gave you the A, B, C’s–actually the A thru N’s–of government accounting terms last week, so this week we will finish off with O – Z’s.  So enjoy the quick brush-up on your accounting vocab, and as before, for a full list of accounting terms, don’t forget to check out the Accounting Glossary.

Accounting Terms Defined (A – N)

Verifying balance sheet

Like it or not, accounting is an integral, and necessary part of our jobs.  There is not a single business or agency today that does not have some element of accounting to attend to: tax reporting, billing, payables, receivables, payroll.  For such an important role it plays, it is not uncommon for the job to be handed over to someone with little, or no accounting experience.  And while these jobs may start with an accounting introduction that includes entering invoices, billing customers, or entering payroll, it is important to understand how inaccurate entries or account coding can affect the overall accounting picture. The Benefits of Cloud Apps

Cloud Computing ImageFirst virtual offices, now virtual servers. Is this the future of information storage and access?

The Buzzword: Cloud Computing.

What It Is: Unlike a network server, which is a physical entity, cloud computing is a service where resources, information, and software can be accessed by multiple computers over a larger network (i.e. the Internet).

This “virtual server” can be accessed by anyone in the “network” anytime, from any computer; allowing for easy access to applications and sharing of information between users. Because of easy transfer of applications and maintenance of software, more and more customers are migrating towards clouds and away from purchasing software because cloud computing creates efficiency. Take for example the computer: seemingly harmless at first, improper use of a computer can lead to eyesight problems, carpal tunnel, and back pain.

Here is a list of the most common office injuries you may not have thought of, and how to prevent them:

  • Inadequate or poor lighting: Bad lighting can lead to vision problems and tension headaches.

Lifelong learning: The benefits and the how-to

Coffee Shop, Learning Resource Centre, Edge Hi...

A schoolteacher of mine used to say, “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.”  Isn’t that so true?  Doesn’t learning ultimately always benefit over having someone do it for you?  Of course it does!  Why?

  • Learning helps us understand.
  • Learning keeps us sharp.
  • Learning makes us an asset at work.
  • Learning keeps us young and up to date on our ever-changing world.
  • Learning builds credibility.
  • Learning makes us enjoyable to work with.

What are “synchronized” backups and why are they important?A synchronized backup provides a snapshot of how everything was in each application database at essentially a single point in time. It is normally scheduled to run automatically late each night. Read more >
