Why Government is So Quick to Adopt The Cloud

English: Cloud ComputingUsually a late adopter, the Government is more commonly associated with “slow and secure” rather than “high tech and new.” But when it comes to the cloud, more and more local governments and municipalities are taking the leap, and cloud is quickly “changing everything in Government IT.”

We ran across an article in Government Technology about local government cloud adoption, and thought it was an interesting—though lengthy—read.

The article discusses how once counties and cities adopt the cloud for one thing (say, the County Appraisers office), the usability, cost-savings, and quickness encourages them to explore other areas where the cloud would be helpful. Read more >

November 17, 2014

It’s getting close to the time of year when I start driving through the blessed state of Montana. Yep, that’s right, it’s winter. Gazing at the snow capped mountains got me thinking about driving on passes in the winter, which got me thinking about getting ready. Remember, it is always cheaper to learn from someone else’s experience – so in looking back at the previous year’s travels, I want to share some advice as a winter road warrior. Read more >

Time Saver Tip: P-Card Credit Card Management Software by BMS

Are you already enjoying or still just thinking about getting in on the BMO P-Card rebates that MASBO is sharing with Montana school districts which use BMO’s Procurement Card (P-Card)? The P-Card and most bank credit cards offer sophisticated controls and aid in reducing paperwork. Rebates based on use activity are making P-Cards a particularly hot topic. They seem like the sweetest thing since Splenda!

As sweet as it all seems, tracking credit cards and vendor purchases can be quite a task for the school district clerk. For example, maybe you need to find an invoice but can’t remember when the item was purchased. Read more >

Office Health Trend: Standing Desks

Standing desks are the latest trend for office workers looking to maintain a healthier working environment, joined by other office health trends such as the exercise bike desk and the treadmill desk. We even have a standing desk right here in our BMS offices!

Because they promote a healthy lifestyle during work hours, many offices have found wonderful benefits to providing employees with standing desks. Some of these benefits to standing desks include:

  • Reduction in obesity: Standing contributes to increased activity throughout the day, which results in a reduction of obesity.
  • Reduction in medical problems: Standing contributes to a reduction in the risk of Type 2 Diabetes and other metabolic problems.

Black Mountain Software Grows Hair to Grow Awareness

PiggyBank-cash01319In Montana, and more specifically at Black Mountain Software in Polson and Helena, the arrival of winter weather and the proliferation of men’s facial hair growth has long been correlated. But in recent years mo’ (moustache) and beard growth during the month of November has taken on a meaning beyond warmth. The cultural phenomena known as Movember and No Shave November are now often the driving force – meaning you might want to give the next hairy man you pass on the street a high-five and thank him for raising awareness for men’s health issues. During Movember, moustaches become walking, talking billboards that spark conversation and fundraising for major men’s health concerns such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. Happy Holiday Cards

Mike-UB Favorite_MG_8019“That time of year” rolls around so quickly.

Time to haul out the boxes of holiday decorations. Time to bring out the winter attire. Time to look at schedules and figure out dates when everyone can get together. Yes, I’m talking about … September!

“September?” You say. Yes, that’s when the Black Mountain Software holiday prep begins. That’s because Black Mountain Software has a fairly long (both in years and preparation) tradition of mailing holiday cards featuring staff photos to our clients, prospective clients, business partners, and vendors. We are a friendly, small-town company and many of our staff members work one-on-one with our clients, so a stuffy corporate holiday card just doesn’t seem to fit our style very well. Read more >

What Makes Special Districts, Special?

special districtsOn various forums we participate in, we notice a lot of discussion about or involving special districts. We also notice that confusion exists about what qualifies as a special district, and the pros and cons of a special district set up.

What is a special district?

A special district is defined as any district that incorporates a separate form of government in order to provide public services to a specific area. A special district can be established to deliver any of a wide range of services including airports, highways, mass transit, parks, cemeteries, hospitals, irrigation, conservation, gas utility and more. While characteristics of special districts vary according to location and other specifics, there are four main characteristics that typically remain the same. Small Town Stories: Town of Circle, MT

We love to “circle” the 24 states where Black Mountain Software has customers, in search of Small Town Stories, and our latest stop is the Town of Circle, Montana!

Recently, the Town of Circle happened to become Black Mountain Software’s 300th Montana customer. We decided to celebrate this milestone by delivering a $300 check to the Circle Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture to use toward their annual Town & Country Day expenses. Emily Guldborg, Treasurer for the Chamber and Manager of the McCone County Credit Union, responded that they “greatly appreciated” the extra monies for their event, which celebrates the region’s rich agriculture and ranching industries (the area’s main economic driving force). Time-Saver Tips: Using the Daily Time Card Module

imagesGuest Blog By: Teresa, BMS Sales Manager and former Montana school clerk

We all have busy jobs and are constantly trying to do more with less. Though processing of payroll and time cards is a necessary task, it’s not always the most efficient. That is why Black Mountain Software developed the Daily Time Card module for use with our school or municipal Payroll software.

Processing payroll pretty much kills a day (or two in some cases!). For example, in school administration, one must gather time sheets, fan through extra-curricular trips, verify teacher leave, and then, worst of all, sort out who subbed for who and how to pay the substitute teachers. Read more >

2014 City Clerk Salary Survey Results and Infographic

Last month, we asked members of our LinkedIn Group, The City Clerk Cafe, to participate in a city clerk salary survey to find out more about city council and city clerk pay. We wanted to paint an accurate picture of how population affects city council, mayor, and city clerk salary.

What we found was very interesting!

What we learned from the 2014 City Clerk Salary Survey

  • The higher the city population, the higher the City Council pay–by quite a bit! In towns with under 5,000 residents, the salary of a city council member may just be less than the gas it costs to get to the meeting—an average of $2,400 a year!
