Happy Holiday Cards

Mike-UB Favorite_MG_8019“That time of year” rolls around so quickly.

Time to haul out the boxes of holiday decorations. Time to bring out the winter attire. Time to look at schedules and figure out dates when everyone can get together. Yes, I’m talking about … September!

“September?” You say. Yes, that’s when the Black Mountain Software holiday prep begins. That’s because Black Mountain Software has a fairly long (both in years and preparation) tradition of mailing holiday cards featuring staff photos to our clients, prospective clients, business partners, and vendors. We are a friendly, small-town company and many of our staff members work one-on-one with our clients, so a stuffy corporate holiday card just doesn’t seem to fit our style very well. However, a custom photo card when you have a staff of over 40 people is not necessarily quick or simple either.

Chris-Steve-IMG_0460 (2)September really is the deadline for the Marketing staff to hire the photographer and graphic designer, select the photo location, decide on any particular theme we might be pursuing, and get the photo shoot placed on everyone’s calendar. The photos are taken in October, followed by a flurry of design concepts, editing, and proofing the first couple of weeks of November. No later than November 20, the files are sent off to the printer. We stamp envelopes and mail 1,000 holiday greeting cards the first week of December.

We think it’s worth the time and effort – the early autumn 2013 search for Santa hats, snowflake headbands, and reindeer antlers – the October 2014 crafting of “overly festive” Christmas sweaters. It’s nice to have a hint of our Linds-Robin-Carlee_IMG_0486summer tans still showing when our holiday photos are taken, and we do take the liberty of having some fun with it.

In our 2014 card, in addition to the Ugly Christmas Sweater theme (which is quite obvious to see), we included another more subtle costume joke in each photo panel. Can you spot it? Comment and let us know!

Shay Baize, clerk at Lima (MT) Schools commented to BMS Support team member Shauna on 12/3 that she “loved the Where’s Waldo sweaters” throughout our photos. That was the ‘subtle costume joke’ answer we were looking for, so Shay is the winner of our quiz. We’ll be sending her a gift in the mail soon. (By popular request, it will NOT be an ugly Christmas sweater.) Congrats, Shay! Thanks for playing!
