Things to Consider When Choosing a Mac vs. PC vs. Tablet

tablet-314153_640 copyBuying a new computer or device can be a challenge, especially with so many choices to choose from. Should you buy a Mac, PC, or tablet? Each has its own pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages, and things they can or can’t do.

There are many factors that should be taken into consideration when deciding what type of computer is best for your situation. For instance, tablets are great because they are small and mobile. Macs are secure, but everything is proprietary, so it can be difficult to find software and games that are compatible (in fact, Black Mountain Software is currently not compatible with Macs and Tablets). PCs still have the best selection of available games, software and features. With so many options it can be hard to decide, so we decided to take a look at the pros and cons of each that should be considered when choosing whether to buy a new PC, tablet or Mac.

Factor 1: What will it be used for?

When choosing the correct computer or device, you should contemplate what it will be used for. Work? Play? Social Media? Graphics? Software? The Cloud?

Tablets are great for browsing the web, tracking tasks, and chatting with friends, but contain little to no internal memory, so if you need to do anything more complex than that, you may want to think more about a PC or Mac computer. Mac computers are fairly limited in their features as well, as most programs are developed for Windows first. If you are looking to create complex documents, Microsoft Office is the best document creation suite available.

Factor 2: Disadvantages of tablets and Mac OS

  • Price: Mac devices are much more expensive than PCs with equal features and hardware. Software previously purchased on a PC may not transfer to a Mac, which means buying new software at an additional expense as well. Tablets are generally cheaper, but they lack features including software, games, memory, processor power, and more.
  • Download limits: The iPad has a 100 mb file size limit for downloads that are not on WiFi. This can cause issues when you need to download large files, but are on your mobile connection.
  • Software: Software for Macs is limited, as many software developers make their software specifically for Windows. The software that is available for macs is much overpriced, while Windows software developers compete to keep prices low.
  • Size: Tablets are small and thin, which makes them easy to carry on your person, and easy to transport. However, this also makes them easy to lose, easy to drop and break, and easy for thieves to steal.
  • Security: Most users do not install antivirus or other protective software on their tablets. While most apps that come from the main app stores have been scanned and are virus-free, occasionally infected apps do sneak through. Visiting infected websites can cause your browser or other software to become infected as well.

While tablets, Macs and PCs all have their uses and advantages, from our perspective PCs have the best selection of software, and are available at a much lower cost than Macs. Tablets are useful for many simple tasks, but you will need a PC or Mac for more complex tasks. Overall, if you are looking for an affordable machine with the most features and software, the PC is often the best choice.
