Intern Abby, The Dirty Dash, and a Chili Cookoff

Hello, Everyone!

The final weeks of summer were filled with a lot of community events. As a company team, some members from BMS participated in two great events; one local event and one national event. I discovered that coming together outside of the office as a team is a great way to bond on a more personal level with fellow coworkers. Not only were these events great for getting to know coworkers, they were also great in the fact that we were helping others and supporting the community, all the while having fun.

Saturday, August 24 the 8th Annual “Rotary Festival for Youth and Chili Cook Off” was held at Polson’s Riverside Park. Read more >

Journey of a BMS Summer Intern (Part II)

by: Abigail Luke, BMS Summer Intern

Week 9

Hello, again!

Here I am, still enjoying my summer internship at Black Mountain Software. At this point I have been able to work with a lot of the staff here and have become well-acquainted. I have also learned a lot and gained many new experiences.

These past weeks I have been working on development projects. These projects are ones that improve a specific function within the government accounting software. I have also been helping with reports, creating ones requested by customers to give them necessary information to help them make their job a little easier. Read more >

Getting the Most Out of Your Government Conference Experience

Autumn is fast approaching and alongside it comes many exciting things: colorful Montana foliage, brisk nights, a new school year, new budgets, and…conferences.

In order to make the most of the bustling September conference schedule, we like to put our heads together and make a plan of attack.

Previously, we’ve talked about how conference attendees can maximize their conference experience with these five tips:

  • Navigate through the chaos.  Knowing that conferences are jam-packed with information and activities, determine a plan of action ahead of time.  List out the vendors you want to see and the seminars you want to attend ahead of time, so you don’t forget and miss out!

Essay: What Role Should Techology Play in Education?

What role should technology play in education?  That’s quite a big question for any one person to answer.  But if you are Jaclyn Rauthe of Flathead High School (Kalispell, MT), then you do so with ease.  Jaclyn’s essay on the topic won her the 2013 Black Mountain Software $500 Higher Education Scholarship.

After careful (blind) review of over 150 submittals, BMS chose Jaclyn’s essay as the winner of the scholarship, based on her answer to the question, “What role should technology play (if any) in the education of yourself, your siblings, or in the future, your own children?” We wanted to share her award-winning entry with you:

Throughout history, we have seen how education is affected by technology.

Black Mountain Software Awards Higher Education Scholarship

graduation caps

Black Mountain Software is pleased to announce that Jaclyn Rauthe of Flathead High School in Kalispell, Montana, has been selected as the 2013 winner of the company’s $500 higher education scholarship.

First awarded in April of 2003, the Black Mountain Scholarship was originally given out at the MASBO (Montana Association of Business Officials) conference each year.  In fact, during the first couple of years of its establishment, members of the MASBO board were asked to be part of the final selection process for the submitted essays.

As the interest in the scholarship grew, it became evident we were asking too much of the already busy MASBO board members, so Black Mountain Software took over handling the entire process in-house.  Currently the scholarship is under the care of Donna Hislop, Black Mountain Software’s Business/HR Manager, who has been involved with the scholarship since its inception.  Using a system that removes the name from every essay (so that an applicant’s name never enters the process until a winning essay has been selected), Donna, with the assistance of several coworkers from BMS, reads the final essays to determine a winner.
