How Black Mountain Software Helps Greet A New Hire

It’s done, and now it’s begun. The recruitment process–over. The first impressions–in the distant past. The acceptance agreement–signed and done. And now your new employee is at the front desk, reporting for the first time. What is going through their head? What are they feeling?

This may depend on what has already transpired between her/him and your company. If your workplace culture has made the employee feel warm and welcome throughout the hiring process, it is likely the new employee is positive and excited! And if they felt the environment was warm and inviting, it’s probably an indication that you are positive and excited as well! Read more >

by: David Morton, Customer Solutions Coordinator and Guest Blogger for the BMS County Traveling Road Show Series

These are the chronicles of one David Morton, road warrior on a mission to solve client problems for Black Mountain’s Governmental Accounting Software. What you are about to read is real.

January 23, 2015

I drove 1,567 miles last week; Polson to Columbus, Columbus to Red Lodge, Red Lodge to Forsyth, Foryth to Miles City, Miles City to Glendive, Glendive to Wibaux, Wilbaux to Ekalaka, and Ekalaka back.

The visibility was good. So good in fact, I was able to spot two of Montana’s little-known and elusive white Snow Fly. Read more >

It’s getting close to the time of year when I start driving through the blessed state of Montana. Yep, that’s right, it’s winter. Gazing at the snow capped mountains got me thinking about driving on passes in the winter, which got me thinking about getting ready. Remember, it is always cheaper to learn from someone else’s experience – so in looking back at the previous year’s travels, I want to share some advice as a winter road warrior. Read more >

Black Mountain Software Grows Hair to Grow Awareness

PiggyBank-cash01319In Montana, and more specifically at Black Mountain Software in Polson and Helena, the arrival of winter weather and the proliferation of men’s facial hair growth has long been correlated. But in recent years mo’ (moustache) and beard growth during the month of November has taken on a meaning beyond warmth. The cultural phenomena known as Movember and No Shave November are now often the driving force – meaning you might want to give the next hairy man you pass on the street a high-five and thank him for raising awareness for men’s health issues. During Movember, moustaches become walking, talking billboards that spark conversation and fundraising for major men’s health concerns such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. Happy Holiday Cards

Mike-UB Favorite_MG_8019“That time of year” rolls around so quickly.

Time to haul out the boxes of holiday decorations. Time to bring out the winter attire. Time to look at schedules and figure out dates when everyone can get together. Yes, I’m talking about … September!

“September?” You say. Yes, that’s when the Black Mountain Software holiday prep begins. That’s because Black Mountain Software has a fairly long (both in years and preparation) tradition of mailing holiday cards featuring staff photos to our clients, prospective clients, business partners, and vendors. We are a friendly, small-town company and many of our staff members work one-on-one with our clients, so a stuffy corporate holiday card just doesn’t seem to fit our style very well. Read more >

Saying “YES”: Five Ways To Spot Good Customer Service

WallBannerThe first week of October marks a new annual holiday being celebrated at Black Mountain Software: Customer Service Week!

To get things started this year, we had each of our Customer Support team members fill out a thought bubble poster that said, “I say YES to…” or “I’m always thinking about…” Their responses were heartfelt and revealing. They relayed that the Black Mountain Software brand principles of friendliness, knowledge, reliability, and responsiveness are alive and well in our Support team members. Obviously, our Support Specialists and Support Managers are at the heart of how Black Mountain Software has been able to build a reputation for providing excellent customer service. Read more >

Just Released: Section Reporting Question Nixed if it Doesn’t Apply

Opening and closing question marksHow can we make the lives of utility billing clerks a little easier? This is the question that runs through our minds on the daily. Sometimes, it’s not about making something new, but rather, making something that already exists work a little better. This was the case with one little section reporting question in our Utility Billing program…

Since the beginning of time (okay, really just since Version 2.0130 in the late 1990’s), BMS Utility Billing software has had a screen that requires clerks to answer yes or no (“Would you like to select a section?”) before proceeding with their report run. Read more >

Black Mountain Software’s “Nerd Herd” Does the Dirty Dash

by: David Tyler, Director of Marketing & Communications

Sept. 9, 2014

When the alarm went off at 7:00 a.m. last Saturday morning, my first thought was of my Black Mountain Software coworkers. It wasn’t a typical Saturday morning. It was the morning that the BMS “Nerd Herd” would assemble and take on The Dirty Dash challenge.

What is the BMS Nerd Herd? Contrary to rumor, it is not a department within Black Mountain Software. Because nearly everyone who works at BMS is either into technology or accounting (yep, a little nerdy), it seemed like a good name for a team assembled from various departments for the purpose of participating in an obstacle course run. Chronicles of a Montana Road Warrior – HE LIVES!

2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited photographed ...Guest Blog by David Morton, Customer Solutions Coordinator

Thursday, July 31, 2014

“Something of interest must have occurred in the last 12 months, Mr. Morton!” exclaimed BMS Marketing Director, Mrs. Smith, as she searched an empty file labeled “David’s Recent Travel Articles.”

I looked at my inquisitor, eyes half-lidded, the guile of a 5-year-old plainly on my face. “If I could remember something interesting, I would gladly tell you,” oozed lazy-like out of my mouth.

“Well, Mr. Morton, today you seem no more professional than a 5-year-old. If you don’t remember interesting things, how can we believe anything you’ve ever told us is true?”

I was tempted to quote from an ancient Tom Cruise movie, but knew she would simply respond with, “Oh, how cliché” and then with certainty I would have replied, “NO! Read more >
