Biography

James was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona where he grew up hiking the diverse desert terrain and wakeboarding warm water lakes. There are several noteworthy characteristics that define James and three that really stand out: self proclaimed Rubik’s Cube aficionado – fast and efficient problem solver; loves to be challenged – fearless of the “double dog dare;” and has a passion for anything technical – tears stuff up and puts it back together, better. These traits were put to the test prior to joining Black Mountain Software. When James was 15 years old, he started freelancing his web development and graphic design skills. After graduating high school, he attended a Technology Institute to be a firefighter. Once ready to fight blazes and save lives, he embraced another type of fire – entrepreneurship. James operated a website and online marketing business for two years, winning the Chamber of Commerce “Business of the Year” award. Ready for yet another challenge, he sold his share of the company, packed up and moved north to Montana. He joined Black Mountain Software in September 2014 where his skills and entrepreneurial experience are truly valued.

Small Town Story

Originally from the big city of Phoenix, Arizona, James recently moved to Helena to leave the busy urban life and heat for something a little quieter, cool and “small town” friendly.

James has always felt and experienced a connection to Montana, where nine of his cousins (including Mark Phillips) have migrated from metropolitan areas. “Most of us had spent time here growing up, attending family functions and reunions. And once we finished school, somehow or another, most of us have found our way north,” explains James, “I knew Helena is where I wanted to be.”
