Chronicles of a Montana Road Warrior – HE LIVES!

2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited photographed ...Guest Blog by David Morton, Customer Solutions Coordinator

“Something of interest must have occurred in the last 12 months, Mr. Morton!” exclaimed BMS Marketing Director, Mrs. Smith, as she searched an empty file labeled “David’s Recent Travel Articles.”

I looked at my inquisitor, eyes half-lidded, the guile of a 5-year-old plainly on my face. “If I could remember something interesting, I would gladly tell you,” oozed lazy-like out of my mouth.

“Well, Mr. Morton, today you seem no more professional than a 5-year-old. If you don’t remember interesting things, how can we believe anything you’ve ever told us is true?”

I was tempted to quote from an ancient Tom Cruise movie, but knew she would simply respond with, “Oh, how cliché” and then with certainty I would have replied, “NO! Read more >

7/8/13 – Almost Wild Goat Skewer

Successful day one. It would be a success if the only thing that went right was managing not to hit the juvenile mountain goat as I rounded a corner along the Clark Fork River. He jumped the guard rail (better him than me) and a quick look in the rear-view mirror revealed he was ok and even feeling spry enough to pose for other drivers’ pictures. Read more >

Sunday, March 17, 2013 – Marias Pass

It’s still winter.

Dave jumped in and started my engine. He steered me out of the garage and up the drive, resetting my trip odometer to zero.  I know that’s the symbol for “long trip ahead.” Someday I hope one of these long trips takes me to Alaska, or maybe to Argentina, where I could shine my headlights out into Lapataia Bay. February 24, 2013 – Eastern Montana Tour – Upside-down Latte

There’s a song that’s made Willy a lot of fans and money, and it really sums up my time here at Black Mountain Software: “On the Road Again.”

I almost managed to get through Polson before I stopped for the first time. My son gave me a Starbucks gift card that I hadn’t used yet.  I picked up my first free latte–spiced vanilla–at the local Safeway Starbucks.  At this point I had gone maybe 7 miles–a darned good start! Read more >

February 19, 2013 – Montana Association of Counties (MACo) Mid-winter Conference, Helena MT

I stopped by 1680 Aspen Street. It was my first stop at our Helena office since I started traveling around the state. After meeting relatively new BMS Utility Billing employees Mike, Mark, and Barbara for the first time, I was also able to say, “howdy-do” to Julia, Jen and Ian, followed by a 45 minute visit with Wayne. January 16, 2013 – SW Montana County Tour (Part I), Boggy Flotsom

After a month of being off the road (enough time for the Christmas and New Year seasons to re-assemble my spirit), I packed my bag and set off yet again. This trip is another loop, but it starts off by taking me south to west-central Montana’s Ravalli County. Read more >

December 13, 2012 -Libby, MT

Well its Sunday, three days after my day two ended (WARNING: Day 2 material just isn’t as fresh as Day 1 and may contain unintended embellishments). But let’s go back…back into the murky world of memory…. Like in the movie Ground Hog’s Day with Ben Affleck….oh wait I mean Bill Murray…nonetheless, my eyes snapped open to the same alarm. December 12, 2012 – Mineral County (9am), Sanders County (1pm)

Bleary eyed, showered, shaved, and dressed, my double-knotted shoes are ready to venture out on the Northwestern Montana loop. Had I started with Libby instead of Superior, you could imagine me as a Montana stock car road warrior: antlered helmet, fur-covered fish in the back of my pickup, always turning left, and making multiple pit stops until I end back home.
